TMD is temporomandibular joint disorder says your orthodontist Dr. Allen Davis at Escondido Orthodontics in North San Diego County, CA. If your teeth don't line up like they used to any more, you may be
suffering from TMD. This
is a term that can actually be applied to any condition that occurs
because the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is inflamed.
The temporomandibular joint is essentially the hinge that holds your
lower jaw to your skull, and when it is inflamed or damaged in any way,
it can be extremely painful. You have two temporomandibular joints, one
on each side of your jaw, and it is typical to experience TMD in both
sides at the same time.
Shifting of the Teeth
The reason that your teeth may not line up as they once did is that
the ball and socket joints are often out of alignment and, as mentioned
above, often very inflamed as a result. In order to correct the problem, you may need a dental orthotic such as a lower jaw
splint.
Sometimes, the wisdom teeth can play a role in the shifting of the
teeth as well. If shifting wisdom teeth is combined with TMD, it may be
necessary to have your wisdom teeth removed. Dental splints may follow
if your teeth don't shift back to their proper positions on their own.
TMD is certainly a difficult thing to deal with, so if you experience
your teeth shifting, scheduling an appointment our office is the smartest course. We want to help you get your smile back,
so give us a call anytime.

How to Retain Your Retainer
How not to forget your retainer from your orthodontist Dr. Allen Davis at Escondido Orthodontics in North San Diego County, CA. Have you
ever woke up in the morning and realized that you forgot to wear your
retainer? If this happened only once, don't panic. Missing one night
with a
retainer is unlikely to cause significant relapse. However, if it
happened often, give our office a visit to make sure
your teeth haven’t shifted position.
Here are some tips to help you remember your retainer:
Here are some tips to help you remember your retainer:
- Write down the instructions we give you for wearing the retainer, whether you should wear it all day or at night, or just a few times a week. Writing things out like this helps set the schedule in your memory
- Clean the retainer when you take it out each time. If you don’t you may not have time when you’re rushing to get to work or school to clean it properly and may be tempted not to wear it.
- Put a note on your mirror or in your purse or wallet reminding you to wear your retainer.
- Set an alarm on your mobile phone to remind you when it’s time to put the retainer in. If you have email with a calendar you can set up daily reminders, too.
- Always put the retainer in its case when you take it out to eat or sleep. You’ll reduce your risk for losing it or accidentally throwing it away.
- If you don’t have to wear the retainer every day, you can use some recurring events to help you remember. With this system for example, watching your favorite weekly TV show, laundry day, or family pizza night can all serve as reminders that you should put in your retainer.
- Don’t be shy about asking for help if you’re forgetful. Assure your spouse, parents, siblings, or roommates that you won’t consider if nagging if they remind you to wear your retainer.
- Surf online for examples of how teeth can shift when retainers are not properly used. Those stories can serve as timely warning not to let the same thing happen to you!

Benefits of Invisalign Teen®
The benefits of Invisalign Teen® by your orthodontist Dr. Allen Davis at Escondido Orthodontics in North San Diego County, CA. You can probably see how teeth straightening can make
your smile more
attractive, but you might be wary of how Invisalign Teen treatment
works. If you’re like most teens, you love
hanging out with your friends, and you don’t want to be different, watch
what you eat, or worry about how you look. Invisalign Teen has several
benefits over traditional metal braces that can make your treatment
easier
People won’t know you’re wearing them.
Invisalign Teen consists of clear trays that are virtual impossible for others to see. Chances are, the only people who know that you are getting your teeth straightened will be your family and any of your friends whom you choose to tell. You won’t need to answer to “Tinsel Teeth” and “Metal Mouth” as some of your classmates with metal braces do.
You can eat what your friends eat.
You take your Invisalign Teen aligners out of your mouth for meals and snacks, so you can eat just like you normally would. You don’t need to worry about food getting stuck in your braces or leading to a bracket popping off. Unlike with braces, you can enjoy the following foods with your friends during Invisalign Teen straightening treatment:
It would be a shame if you took the trouble to straighten your teeth and then found out that you had developed tooth decay while wearing braces. This is less of a problem with Invisalign Teen aligners because they are removable. You can brush and floss your teeth as normal just by taking the trays out of your mouth.
Getting straighter teeth can be a serious confidence-booster in the long run, and with Invisalign Teen, the treatment isn’t that bad. You can wear these clear aligners without letting people know that you’re straightening your teeth, and they won’t interfere with your diet or dental hygiene.

Flossing Without Pain
Here's some flossing tips from your orthodontist Dr. Allen Davis at Escondido Orthodontics in North San Diego County, CA. By no stretch is it rare for your gums to hurt during and after
flossing. Even some bleeding is to be expected. This is especially true
if you have not flossed in a long time. However, if your gums do indeed
hurt when you floss, and unbearably so, there are some things you can
do
Be Gentle
Perhaps the most obvious way to combat gum soreness and bleeding is to be gentle. One of the most common occurrences of these gum problems is over-aggressive flossing. In other words, if you are too rough on your gums while flossing, either because you are out of practice or because you are in a hurry, soreness and hurting is to be expected. Instead, try taking your time and be gentle. Also, if you are just starting out, be patient and consistent, your gums will become more conditioned over time.
Use an Alternative Method
If being consistent and gentle does not work, there are other alternative methods of flossing that you can try. You can also try a water floss machine, or what is sometimes called a water pick. The device essentially shoots water into the crevasses between your teeth, and in other areas of your mouth, in order to dislodge food and plaque. These oral instruments also come with different attachments that allow you to reach many of the hard to see and reach areas of your mouth. And lastly, you can always buy floss that is not as abrasive to your gums. There is floss that comes with soft and gentle coatings that will do less harm to your gums while they are adjusting to the good oral hygiene habit you are creating.
Flossing is one of the easiest parts of oral hygiene to overlook. When you first start out, it is common that you may want to stop because of the pain it can initially cause. However, if you try one, or all, of the above mentioned methods, you will give yourself the best chance of being success with your flossing, and it won't hurt as much.

Braces-Friendly Dinner Recipe
Here's a braces-friendly dinner recipe from your orthodontist Dr. Allen Davis at Escondido Orthodontics in North San Diego County, CA. Wearing braces during your treatment
presents
some unique challenges in the types of food you can safely eat. The
wrong items can be difficult to remove from between your teeth and the
appliance. Other foods may even break or loosen your braces.
Dinner recipe ideas
Lasagna is a great dinner choice because it provides you with several food groups in one easy dish.
Cook the lasagna noodles as directed on the package and drain.
Beat the eggs and combine them with your ricotta or cottage cheese.
Layer 1/2 of the noodles in a 13 x 9 pan. Spread 1/2 of your cottage cheese mix on top of the noodles, then layer 1/2 of the mozzarella on top. Finish this layer with 1/2 of your hamburger mix. Repeat the layering with the other half of your ingredients. Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes.
Meats
You can enjoy ribs and chicken wings as long as you cut the meat from the bone before you eat. The same rule applies to turkey legs; do not gnaw on bones, because this can damage your braces.
Vegetables and fruits
You still need to include fruits and vegetables in your daily meals. Skip corn on the bob, whole apples, and raw carrots. Broccoli is soft but particles can become stuck in your braces, so be sure to brush and floss after your meal.
Desserts
Avoid caramel, taffy, and hard candies for dessert. Pudding and ice cream are fine, but low-sugar versions are best.
Remember that your mouth will be sore after adjustments us. Stick to softer foods until the sensitivity is reduced. Please do not hesitate to ask our team for recipe and meal ideas. We will be happy to take the time to explain which foods items are the best choices and why.
If you have any questions about these recipes, or if you have any questions about eating with braces, please give us a call!

The Importance of Oral Health
The importance of oral health from your orthodontist Dr. Allen Davis at Escondido Orthodontics in North San Diego County, CA. Your teeth are precious. Once your permanent teeth
come in, they need
to last you a lifetime. Extensive tooth decay can lead to dental caries
and the need for fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures.
While these fixes can go a long way toward maintaining your quality of life, they cannot compare to your natural teeth. Getting braces is no excuse to let up on your thorough oral health routine: You need to take good care of your teeth before, during, and after braces to benefit completely from the gains you get from newly straightened teeth.
Why You Should Maintain Good Oral Health for Life
Begin a complete oral health regimen as early as possible in life, and maintain this routine throughout your life. Keeping your (or your child’s baby) teeth clean establishes a routine. It preserves healthy baby teeth whose function is to save space for the permanent teeth when they are ready to come in. Care of your permanent teeth helps preserve the enamel and prevent decay.
Take Special Care with Braces
It is important to pay attention to oral health when you have braces. If you do not take special care of your teeth during the months or years that you have braces, you risk irreversible damage to your teeth. Care is more difficult with braces because food can easily get stuck. In addition to brushing twice daily and flossing each day, we suggest avoiding sticky foods.
